Case 14

I appeared at Denver/Colorado INS center. I'm here in US on work visa. All the process took place in 3.5 hours. Normally it is taking between 2 to 2.5 hours but INS lady told me that they were having problem with computer and it happens normally on Mondays. I was there at 7:25am and went out at almost 12pm. After entering the INS office, security guard took me to the front of line and there I saw the INS representative at the window. Lady took my papers and ask me wait in lounge. My name will be called and then will have the final meeting. The document she took were :

  • Passport with visa with I94

  • H1 visa document

  • Latest salary stub

  • Appointment letter. (This is not documented   anywhere but she asked and was asking religiously)

  • I gave my national ID card but she returned

INS is like other govt. offices. Which means that for some representative some document is MUST but in same office, for some other representative, they don't even ask about it. So bring what you think could be of their interest. For one of my friend, INS representative gave a form to fill out but no one gave me form to enter. Lady was entering all the information what I was telling. Once again, that could not be your case and you end up entering all the information. Lady didn't ask me any political question or anything. She was just asking the required information and her attitude was friendly. The information she asked was typical.

  • My information. Date of birth, address, how long been at current place, place of birth, nationality

  • Parents name, address, phone number. I don't know the month and day of mothers date of birth. That's ok if you know the year only. Even then its ok if you don't know at all. But she need some date to enter so have to come up with some date. So what ever date you give, stick with that.

  • Visa card info

  • Company name and address With me it took 20 minutes and at the end she took finger prints of both index fingers and took the picture. Also said that "smile if you want to".

Suggestions:

  • You don't have to wait in line as regular applicants. INS treat special registration applicants as one who have appointment. In all of the lines, both for entry or for seeing INS representative. At the entry line, just go upfront and tell the security guard that you are there for special registration and they will let you in. I don't know about the other INS offices that how they deal but there is no harm in checking with security office and this will save you pretty good time.

  • Just give the information which he/she ask. Nothing extra.

  • Credit card information and email address are for profiling purpose. Profiling means that INS can track the activity on those. Tracking means they can see that what kind of shopping you are doing and what kind of email matters you write and if you are giving Bank/Check card then they can also track what/where you transactions are going.

  • Don't go on Monday as Monday is the busiest day of week.

  • Drive by the parking lot of INS office before parking 4 blocks down. Chances are you will get the spot.

Thanks and good luck.
