After
hearing horrible stories from people and information on the Web, I felt that as
soon as I am going to step into INS office they will immediately arrest me. in
spite of all this I still decided to go and register myself, as it is of no use
delaying.
I went to Houston INS on 5th Feb, after passing the security screening i
proceed to the registration window, The officer was blunt had no expressions on
his face gave me a paper to fill it and took my passport, i sat down near the
windows curiously looking at other peoples faces to find out what is happening,
i filled out the form and kept it with me until I am being called.
After about half hour i was called and an lady officer said that she needed my
license and the paper i filled, and told me to wait until she calls me again,
20 minutes later i was called again and she escorted me to her office she told
me her name, she was courteous and was talking in a low tone. She told me that
i am out of status, as my H1 petition is pending action, i than told her that
my lawyer had told me that i am not out of status as per a memorandum from
Michael Pearson which was issued on mar30 2000 HQ70/12/P AND HQADN/70/21.1.24-P
regarding the pending petitions. later after competing my registration she gave
me a fin number and told me that i will be investigated by another
officer of INS. I again came out and after 15 minutes another Ins Male officer
took him to his office and just asked me some simple questions and told me to
wait outside. after another 15 minutes he came out and handed my passport to me
and told me that you are done.
I thanked God and came out of the office towards my home. The reason is that
they are not as scary as it seems and if your documents are in order no one can
harm you.
