Case 6

Location: Los Angeles
Time of Arrival: 7:30am
Date: Jan 13th, 2003

I went to the INS Los Angeles at 10:30 with my lawyer and was told to go to room 2024 where the special registration was taking place. At the entrance of the room the guard gave a form to fill out. In that form my biographical information required to be filled out including Mother and Father's birth date, address and phone #, your present address & Phone # etc. Once the form was filled out the guard entered my name in the register, issued me a number & my passport with the I-94 was submitted to the window specified. And then the waiting began. After about three hours the ins officer called out the #s and requested the registrants to submit their US IDs and visa papers. After waiting for a further one & a half hour the ins officer called out the names and returned the Us IDs and the visa papers and to us to wait and that we will be called to the window in a few minutes. Fifteen minutes later I was called to a window and given a form similar to the one I had filled out earlier. Having filled out that form I was asked to take an oath to tell the truth, than the questions started in which they confirmed the information already given to them, which basically took about 5 minutes. Then I was asked to give the finger prints at the same window and a photograph was taken, again at the same window. The total time spent at the window was about 35 - 40 minutes out of which I was standing idle for 30 minutes and waiting for the ins officer to fill out the information in the system the lawyer was with me all throughout this experience. After that I was told to wait about 10 minutes then the passport was returned with the I-94 on which the FIN number was written. I got out of the INS at 4:15 pm.   The registration process had taken a whole working day. The INS officials were very polite in their attitudes and helpful contrary to what is being reported in some sections of the press.   Another thing that I would like to mention here is that there was no one from the Pakistan Consulate there or any other Pakistani Society who have been making noise in the press about the Special Registration.   I would suggest that before you go to the INS for registration consult a immigration lawyer and have him examine your papers to make sure that everything is in order.
