OCTOBER 13, 2005: EARTHQUAKE in PAKISTAN
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED. URGENTLY
The Earthquake which struck South Asia at 8:50 am on October 08, 2005,
is the worst calamity Pakistan has witnessed in its history.
Measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale it has caused enormous devastation
and heavy loss of life in Northern Pakistan. A large number of the
victims were innocent young children, peacefully starting their day at
school.
The tragedy has been compounded by severe landslides affecting
innumerable villages in the mountains by completely cutting off all
road access, communication systems and electricity. Thousands of
people are dead and the survivors are exposed to the elements without
homes, food or clothing. The persistent freezing rain and after-shocks
are adding to their misery. The temperature will begin to drop below
freezing over the next few weeks; thus adequate shelter, food and
medical help are urgently needed.
The Citizens Foundation (TCF), has joined hands with The Institute of
Architects Pakistan (IAP), Association of Consulting Engineers (ACE),
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), International Brands Ltd. (IBL)
and Merck Marker (Pvt.) Ltd, and are jointly organizing and managing
the relief operations.
The Citizens Foundation is a not-for-profit organization working to
provide quality education to the less privileged children of Pakistan.
The suffering from this earthquake is of such a magnitude and scale
that TCF was impelled to plan a two-phased strategy to provide
systematic relief to the victims of this national calamity in the
affected areas of NWFP and Azad Kashmir.
In the first phase our efforts will focus on providing immediate
relief in the form of tents, blankets and food rations to at least
20,000 people in the next fifteen days. For this we need Rs. 30
million.
In the second phase our goal is to help build 5,000 seismically
designed homes in selected villages over the next eighteen months. The
great challenge is the re-building of the infrastructure, the
thousands of homes, schools, hospitals, community centers and other
structures that will help build a community.

both short term and long term rehabilitation.
