OPEN NEW ENGLAND invites you to our next quarterly event!

"Combining Philanthropy and Entrepreneurship:
Creating innovative solutions for social problems"

Saturday, May 22nd, 2004

Description:

The nonprofit environment has changed:

* Community needs are growing in size and diversity.
* More nonprofits are competing for government and philanthropic funds.
* Traditional forms of funding are becoming smaller and less reliable.
* New for-profit businesses are competing with nonprofits to serve community needs.
* Funders and donors are demanding more accountability.

In the face of this new reality, an increasing number of forward-looking entrepreneurs are beginning to appreciate the increased revenue, focus and effectiveness that can come from adopting "for profit" business approaches. Increasingly, they are reinventing themselves as social entrepreneurs, combining the passion of a social mission with business-like discipline, innovation, and determination.

Speakers to include:

  • Ilyas Bhatti,  The Bhatti Group (BGI)

Mr. Bhatti is the President of BGI which provides consulting services in the transportation, environmental, and construction management sectors.  Prior to forming his own company, Bhatti was the Associate Project Director for the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston.   He was appointed by Massachusetts Governor William F. Weld in February 1995 to help construct the largest and most complex highway project ever undertaken in the heart of a major American city. He oversaw the completion and opening of the Project's first major milestone, construction of the Third Harbor Tunnel, officially known as the Ted Williams Tunnel.

  • Asad Azfar, Acumen Fund

Mr. Azfar is the Portfolio Manager of the Economic and Civic Enterprise Portfolio. Prior to joining Acumen Fund, Mr. Azfar worked with the Aga Khan Foundation in Pakistan, including spending several years in rural support work in northern Pakistan, coordinating a social investment fund the Foundation established with the Canadian International Development Agency, and heading the Aga Khan Foundation's NGO Resource Centre.

  • DR. Naveed A. Malik, Virtual University, Pakistan
